چکیده

The paper presents an analysis of the performance of different radar algorithms for rainfall estimation. These are the conventional one based on radar reflectivity factor Z and three polarimetric estimators utilizing different combinations of Z, specific differential phase KDP, and differential reflectivity ZDR. A dense micronetwork of 42 gauges in central Oklahoma, USA, is used for validating the estimates of one-hour accumulations obtained from the nearby operational WSR-88D radar and Cimarron dualpolarization radar. Data set includes 13 storms with 39 hours of observations. An accuracy of point and areal radar rain measurements is assessed. Some radar calibration issues for both conventional and dualpolarization radar are addressed.

Rainfall Estimation with a Polarimetric Prototype of WSR-88D

As part of the Joint Polarization Experiment (JPOLE), the National Severe Storms Laboratory conducted an operational demonstration of the polarimetric utility of the Norman, Oklahoma (KOUN), Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D). The capability of the KOUN radar to estimate rainfall is tested on a large dataset representing different seasons and different types of rain. A dense gaug...

Rain Gauge Station Network Design for Hormozgan Province in Iran

A rain gauge network should serve general as well as specific purposes such as water supply, hydropowergeneration, flood forecasting, irrigation, and flood control. The level of accuracy a network can achieve depends onthe number and locations of gauges in the network. In this study, a rain gauge network was designed for Hormozganprovince in the south of Iran. Monthly rainfall totals from 124 r...

Estimation of Rainfall Based on the Results of Polarimetric Echo Classification

The quality of polarimetric radar rainfall estimation is investigated for a broad range of distances from the polarimetric prototype of the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D). The results of polarimetric echo classification have been integrated into the study to investigate the performance of radar rainfall estimation contingent on hydrometeor type. A new method for rainfall esti...

Assessment of polarimetric rain rate algorithms at C-band frequencies

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of different polarimetric rainfall estimation algorithms at C-band frequencies. The polarimetric rainfall algorithms are obtained using a wide range of measured drop size distributions with an optical disdrometer in the UK. A dense network of raingauges was used to validate the polarimetric rainfall estimates and the overall results were ...

Multicriteria design of rain gauge networks for flash flood prediction in semiarid catchments with complex terrain

[1] Despite the availability of weather radar data at high spatial (1 km) and temporal (5–15 min) resolution, ground‐based rain gauges continue to be necessary for accurate estimation of storm rainfall input to catchments during flash flood events, especially in mountainous catchments. Given economical considerations, a long‐standing problem in catchment hydrology is to establish optimal placem...
